THE PUNK SINGER, the movie documentary about Kathleen Hanna

Though I'm on the mailing list of www.kickstarter.com I haven't been on that long enough to know first hand about this video documentary project dedicated to Kathleen Hanna, punk femminist and singer of riot grrls acts like Bikini Kill, Julie Ruin, Le Tigre.
For those not in the know Kistarter is a NYC based funding platform for creative projects including films, games, and music to art, design, and technology that are brought to life through the direct support of others.
This documentary project originally pledged for a $44,000 goal and successfully raised its funding goal on October 27, 2011.

The movie has got a world premiere on March the 10th 2013 at SXSW Festival in Austin, TX and will get more screening during Hotdocs 20 years anniversary festival in Toronto, Canada http://www.hotdocs.ca/film/title/punk_singer.

Some introductive words on this project by the Kickstarter team: the first question that the mention of a documentary about Kathleen Hanna prompts is usually, Why hasn’t one already been made? Credited as a founder of the third wave of feminism and Riot Grrrl – Hanna has been a seminal radical activist, musician, and cultural icon for over twenty years. She’s also been a lightening rod for controversy, and a famously private person. Five years ago, she disappeared from the public eye, and is only now re-emerging. The Punk Singer combines twenty years of archival footage and an intimate look at four consecutive seasons of Hanna’s present life, to tell the story of what happened, and who she is now.

In a feat nothing short of miraculous, we have managed to complete shooting for The Punk Singer with almost no significant funding. Using all of my personal savings, the pro bono work of an immensely talented crew of people, and a lot of magic, we now have a bounty of stunning footage and are ready to enter the editing phase. Unfortunately, the buck stops here. Or rather, the zero bucks stop us here.

Our editor, Bo Mehrad, has already been working on the project for the last few months: organizing the footage, preparing the archival materials, and cutting together short sequences. On Sept 13th, I handed him the final interviews for The Punk Singer.
